Current Status of the Faculty of Agriculture

The Faculty of Agriculture at Wardak University was established in 2014, concurrent with the establishment of the university, with two academic departments—Horticulture and Agronomy—and three faculty members. Since its inception, the Faculty has made remarkable progress in academic, practical, and research activities and has become an important institution for educating qualified agricultural professionals to serve Afghanistan's agricultural sector.

At present, the Faculty has a total organizational structure of 20 positions. Of these, 12 are academic staff members holding Master's and Ph.D. degrees. In addition, the Faculty employs four administrative staff members, two support staff members, and two gardeners. Currently, 219 students are enrolled in the Departments of Horticulture and Agronomy. Throughout its 13 years of academic service, the Faculty has graduated 658 students who are now contributing to the development of society.

In addition to providing high-quality theoretical education, the Faculty places strong emphasis on developing students' practical skills. The availability of a modern greenhouse and a well-equipped research farm enables students to gain hands-on experience and become familiar with modern agricultural technologies.

The Faculty also conducts scientific research aimed at addressing the challenges facing Afghanistan's agricultural sector. Faculty members and students collaboratively undertake research in areas such as improved seed production, water resource management, plant disease prevention and control, and soil fertility enhancement.

The Faculty of Agriculture has a dedicated academic and administrative building. Its classrooms are equipped with essential teaching facilities, including LCD displays, multimedia projectors, desks, chairs, whiteboards, markers, electricity, and cooling fans. The administrative offices are furnished with computers, printers, filing cabinets, and other necessary equipment. In addition, the University Central Library houses a wide collection of agricultural reference books, while the Faculty maintains its own departmental library for students' use. Internet access is also available for both faculty members and students.

The Faculty has undertaken significant initiatives to promote quality assurance and continuous improvement. To strengthen academic, administrative, and research performance, several specialized committees have been established within its organizational structure. These include the Quality Assurance Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Curriculum Committee, Research Committee, E-Learning Committee, Examination Committee, Cultural Affairs Committee, and Discipline Committee. Among their major achievements are the development of the Faculty's Strategic Plan and the continuous enhancement of teaching quality.

Furthermore, one of the Faculty's most significant accomplishments is the establishment of its Research Farm. Constructed on 18 jeribs of land with a development budget of approximately AFN 19 million provided by the Ministry of Higher Education, the farm is equipped with a modern greenhouse, administrative building, irrigation system, solar power facilities, and dedicated research units. It provides an ideal environment for practical training, scientific experimentation, and applied agricultural research.

Despite these achievements, the Faculty continues to face several challenges, including limited financial resources, shortages of advanced laboratory and research equipment, and constraints in practical training facilities. Nevertheless, the Faculty's leadership and academic staff remain committed to advancing modern agricultural education, expanding scientific research, and delivering high-quality academic services to contribute effectively to the sustainable development of Afghanistan's agricultural sector.
